LAURA SMITH BLAIR
Marin County, California
Lives and works in California
Laura Smith Blair was born in Marin County and raised on the beaches of California's central coast. Drawing inspiration from the environment around her is a constant throughout her career. She earned her BFA from the University of California at San Diego, where she concentrated in painting and studied under Faith Ringgold. Upon graduation, Smith Blair continued her studies at The Rhode Island School of design, exploring conceptual ideas in painting and identity performance art.
Following RISD, Smith Blair painted alongside Dong Sun Kim, the brilliant muralist from South Korea, where she began embracing a tighter technical style of painting. Her practice in this large format grew with commissions for murals in public spaces as well as in residential and commercial settings and she continued painting in this large scale for the next fifteen years. In 1999, Smith Blair opened a gallery for emerging California artists. It was this connection to gallery scale work and paintings that led to new artistic explorations at this more personal scale and her current practice.
Smith Blair's work has been shown in many galleries throughout California. Her work is included in numerous public and corporate collections, including The Stanford Hospital, Children's Hospital in Oakland, St. Mary's Hospital, San Francisco, and Pacific Catch Fish House Restaurants, among others, in addition to being included in many private collections in the US and abroad.
In 2018, paintings from Smith Blair’s new Interrupted landscape series will be included in a group exhibition in Florence, Italy and will be included in the 2020 Venice Biennale.
